HONOLULU — The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Transportation Services (DTS) and Honolulu Complete Streets welcomes Makiki residents to the first community outreach event of the Honolulu Safer Streets project, on Tuesday, August 18. The Honolulu Safer Streets project is developing traffic safety improvements intended to prevent crashes, injuries and to save lives along seven of our island’s highest-crash corridors: South King Street, Beretania Street, Young Street, Kapiʻolani Boulevard, Wilder Avenue, Piʻikoi Street, and Kāheka Street.
The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m., and will be held at Makiki District Park in the First Floor Auditorium.
This first meeting will put a focus on Wilder Avenue (from Pensacola to Punahou Street), and upper Piʻikoi (from Lunalilo to Pensacola Street). The City will be seeking the public’s feedback on areas in need of improvement and roadway changes that include lane reconfiguration, crosswalk safety enhancements, bus stop amenities, bicycle facilities, dedicated left-turn lanes, and traffic signal adjustments. Upcoming roadway paving projects by the Department of Facility Maintenance (DFM) provide near-term opportunities to implement safety upgrades that can be done through new roadway striping and signage.
Public meetings will be held later this year for other project corridors. The public is also encouraged to share their traffic safety concerns and ideas on the Honolulu Safer Streets Webmap.
The project corridors were identified by crash analysis done in preparation of the Oʻahu Pedestrian Plan and the O‘ahu Vision Zero Action Plan. Although they comprise only a small portion of the island’s roadway network, they account for a disproportionate number of serious injury and fatal crashes. As busy urban streets, they serve thousands of pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, and motorists daily, while providing critical connections to schools, employment centers, commercial areas, and other major destinations.
This initiative is funded through the Federal Highway Administration’s Safe Streets and Roads for All Grant Program, a competitive federal grant program focused on preventing roadway fatalities and serious injuries. The planning effort is expected to continue through 2027, resulting in a set of actionable, implementable safety projects.
