PRESCHOOLERS INTERPRET “WAIKUI“
THROUGH THE MORNING OF AUGUST 4, 2025
ʻAlani Strode Montessori preschool students are frequent visitors to the museum. The Sculpture Garden is a favorite of the keiki, and each time they return they ask to go into the “pool” - the glass sculpture by Doug Young. During the spring semester, keiki at ʻAlani Strode learn about the Hawaiian water cycle, including the wai and kai coming together to create a water habitat for various iʻa - the waikui referenced by the sculpture.

Each student created their own version of “Waikui” with acrylic paints on canvas. This one-week display is on the ground floor next to the entrance to the MORI shop and can be viewed during the August 1 First Friday (5:00 - 9:00 p.m.) and on Monday morning.

Supported by public funding through the
Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.
