HONOLULU – Mayor Rick Blangiardi announced on Thursday that Megan Johnson, former general counsel for the State Office of the Auditor, has been appointed as the new Deputy Director of the Department of Customer Services.

Johnson steps into the role, which had been vacant since July 15, bringing her extensive experience in legal oversight and government ethics to the 300-employee department responsible for key city functions such as vehicle registration, driver’s licensing, and handling resident service complaints.

“We are thrilled to have Megan join our team, she has a proven track record of ensuring integrity and accountability at all levels of government,” said Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “Her expertise will be invaluable as the Department of Customer Services continues to enhance its operations and deliver on its mission.”

Johnson’s responsibilities as deputy director will include overseeing contracts, guiding legislative initiatives, and advising on public access to records under Hawai'i’s Uniform Information Practices Act. Her reputation as a strong advocate for ethics and operational efficiency precedes her, making her a key asset to the department.

“We are delighted to welcome Megan, who will further strengthen our senior leadership team,” said Kim Hashiro, Director of the city’s Department of Customer Services. “I look forward to working closely with her to accelerate progress in providing service that exceeds expectations.”

Prior to her eight years as general counsel with the Office of the Auditor, Johnson spent four years as a legal analyst and attorney with the Hawai'i State Ethics Commission. She also has seven years of experience practicing law at Cades Schutte LLP, representing clients in sectors such as hospitality, banking, and real estate development.

Johnson holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a focus on information systems from the University of Southern California, and a juris doctor from Pepperdine University School of Law.

“I’m honored to join the Department of Customer Services and look forward to contributing to its continued success in meeting the needs of our community,” said Johnson. “I’m eager to help ensure that we respond effectively to the challenges ahead.”

Johnson begins in her new role on Thursday, September 26, 2024.
