Foster Botanical Garden scheduled to reopen Monday, Aug. 14
O‘AHU -- The Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is pleased to announce the eagerly-awaited reopening of Foster Botanical Garden on Monday, Aug. 14 under its regular hours of operation from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
"We really appreciate the public's patience while we worked with the contractor, park & garden staff, and our counterparts in the Department of Design and Construction to finish several efforts within this popular, urban garden," said Joshlyn Sand, Director of the Honolulu Botanical Gardens. "It is evident through the many inquiries we received about the garden how beloved this location is to kama‘āina and malihini alike. To show our appreciation, we are extending the expiration date for garden visitors holding annual passes valid during the closure period."
For garden visitors with annual passes valid during the closure (from Feb. 13, 2023 -- Aug. 13, 2023) their pass will be extended by seven months from its original expiration date.
Located on the mauka-end of Chinatown, the botanical garden was closed on Feb. 13 for a project to improve the accessibility at Foster's entrance, bathrooms, community garden, and botanical pathways.
The closure was extended as the result of unforeseen circumstances, including a historic wall near the Conservatory and buried utilities at the garden's entrance. These conditions required additional review and realignment of the accessible walkway to properly address these issues.
A separate project to demolish the old annex building within Foster is being tasked by the City, but will be localized and not require closure of the garden.
The 14-acre Foster Botanical Garden is the oldest of the city's five botanical gardens. Some of the garden's magnificent trees were planted by Dr. William Hillebrand in the 1850's. It is home to hundreds of species of tropical plants, trees and flowers, including the ever-popular
Amorphophallus titanum, also known as the Corpse Flower. For more information about the garden, including a unique virtual tour, visit the Foster Botanical Garden's virtual tour website, sponsored by the Garden Club of Honolulu: bit.ly/VirtualFosterGarden
