2023 Hawaiʻi Regional Scholastic Student Art Awards
Call for student artists: the 2023 Hawaiʻi Regional Scholastic Art Awards competition opens September 1, 2022 on the ArtAndWriting.org website. All Hawaiʻi students grades 7-12 (ages 13+) are eligible, and entry fees are covered by the SFCA. Please help us get the word out about this competition, especially to Neighbor Island public and charter schools! Winning entries will be displayed in the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum (dates to be announced), with top entries continuing on to the national level Scholastic Art Awards competition. Call for student artists! Hawaiʻi students K-12 are invited to enter the Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation "Inspired in Hawaiʻi: Acts of Kindness" 2022 essay, poster, digital media poster and video contest. Poetry Out Loud 2023
Get ready for Poetry Out Loud 2023! The 2022-2023 teachers guides are now available at PoetryOutLoud.org/Teachers-Organizers. Poetry Out Loud seeks to foster the next generation of literary readers by capitalizing on the latest trends in poetry recitation and performance. The program is open to all high school students and builds on the resurgence of poetry as an oral art form, inviting the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and theater into the English classroom. Through Poetry Out Loud, students can master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.

The National Endowment for the Arts and The Poetry Foundation partner with state arts agencies to bring the Poetry Out Loud program and dynamic recitation contest to all 50 states and the US territories.
Each participating teacher/school/organization receives access to free multimedia curriculum materials – a poetry anthology, teachers’ guide, lesson plan ideas, and comprehensive website all aligned to national standards – augmenting their regular curriculum with poetry recitation and a local-level competition. Local-level recitation champions compete to advance to the state and then national levels.

Art Bento on Hiatus
After many years of successfully administering the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum's Art Bento museum education program, we will be evaluating and restructuring the program during the 2023 Fiscal Year. During this time we will be interviewing all of those involved, including teachers, teaching artists, administrators and students. Our goal is to offer a museum education program that is more inclusive, expanding beyond Oʻahu to better engage students statewide. For those schools who are interested in coming to the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum this year, we will be offering school visits for the School Year 22/23. SFCA Grants Spotlight
“Ke Kauā O Ka Lāhui: The Life of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole
A new play by Hawaiian author and playwright Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl, “Ke Kauā O Ka Lāhui: The Life of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole” will premiere this month at Iolani Palace. Kneubuhl received a $7,225 SFCA American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant for this play. Outdoor performances 3:30 – 5:30 p.m., September 4, 5, 10, and 11. “Passing Notes: The Kohala Ephemera Project”
Mark “Boots” Lupenui, “PASSING NOTES: The Kohala Ephemera Project.” Kahilu Theatre Gallery July 21 to August 28, 2022. For the project, Mark identified instrumental members of the Kohala community and created portraits of each person on paper which was given by the individuals themselves. Everyone was asked to provide a piece of original paper that represented their contribution to the community. For example, Hawaiian sailing canoe master navigator Chadd ʻŌnohi Paishon gave Mark some vintage maps he used in his training. Paishon has been a crew member on the Hōkuleʻa and is currently co-leader and Senior Captain of Nā Kālai Waʻa, facilitating educational programs about voyaging history and culture and mentoring students.

•Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities Call for New Board Members Open Through October 15 Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities is currently accepting applications for community leaders interested in joining our Board of Directors—an energetic and creative governing body committed to the humanities in Hawaiʻi. We are particularly interested in strengthening leadership in the following areas to help us grow as an organization: Maui, Hawaiʻi Island, and Molokaʻi humanities and community work, media and storytelling, K-12 humanities education, legal expertise, government/civic leadership, local business leaders. •NEA Literature Fellowships: Translation Projects FY2024 Through fellowships to published translators, the National Endowment for the Arts supports projects for the translation of specific works of prose, poetry, or drama from other languages into English. Application closes January 12, 2023. https://www.arts.gov/grants/translation-projects
•NEA Webinar on GSA’s Art in Architecture Program and Upcoming Artist Commissions Series The National Endowment for the Arts is hosting an informational webinar about the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Art in Architecture program and upcoming opportunities in New York and New England on Tuesday, September 13, at 1 pm ET. The Art in Architecture Program oversees the commissioning of artworks for federal buildings nationwide. Additional webinars are scheduled for the Upper Midwest, Southwest, and Pacific Northwest. •NEH Scholarly Editions and Scholarly Translations This program supports collaborative teams who are editing, annotating, and translating foundational humanities texts that are vital to scholarship but are currently inaccessible or only available in inadequate editions or translations. Typically, the texts are significant literary, philosophical, and historical materials, but works in other humanities fields may also be the subject of an edition. Applications close November 30, 2022. Get Ready for the 2023 Hawaiʻi State Legislature Grant-In-Aid
Get ready for the Hawaiʻi State Legislature 2023 Chapter 42F (Grant-in-Aid)! The Grant-in-Aid application period typically opens in early January and closes shortly after the legislative session begins in late January. Review the 2022 GIA information at Capitol.Hawaii.gov/GIA/GIA.aspx to prepare (please note that instructions may change). For example, organizations will need a Certificate of Good Standing from the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA), which may take a few weeks to receive (learn more about how to request a Certificate of Good Standing on the DCCA website: cca.hawaii.gov/breg/faqs/general/can-i-request-a-good-standing-certificate/). Grant awards and applications are also posted with the 2022 GIA information.

There are two types of grants: Operating and Capital Improvement Project (CIP) grants. Generally, Operating grants are for an organization’s program expenses and CIP grants are for construction projects. The Legislature decides who is awarded a grant, the type of grant, the award amount, what the funds can be used for, and which state department will administer said award. Please contact the House Committee on Finance staff (808/586-6200) or Senate Committee on Ways and Means staff (808/586-6800) if you have questions.

SFCA Biennium Grants applications close October 30
SFCA Biennium Grants: application for 2024 and 2025 cycles open September 1 – October 30, 2022. Applications open to eligible Hawaiʻi arts and culture nonprofit organizations that have filed the Intent to Apply. Biennium Grants support projects designed to promote, perpetuate, and preserve culture and the arts in Hawaiʻi.⁠ Grant categories are Heritage/Preservation; Community Arts, Community Development, Arts and Healing; Arts Education; and Presentation/Performing Arts. Grants amounts are $5,000, $10,000, and $15,000.

This Arts Data Profile gives national and state-level estimates of artists in the workforce. The figures derive from American Community Survey (ACS) data covering 2015-2019. The ACS is conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. State-level estimates are available for the total number of artists and for each individual type of artist (workers in any of 13 specific artist occupations). 2022 Hawaiʻi Triennial - Pacific Century Exhibit Expanded
Recently installed in the Turnaround Gallery are photos by Hawaiʻi Triennial 2022 artist Ed Greevy, previously on display at the Honolulu Museum of Art. Greevy collaborated for decades with Hawaiian activist Haunani-Kay Trask, and Greevy’s photographs document environmental and social justice movements in Hawaiʻi. The photos in the exhibit are also published in the book “Kūʻē: Thirty Years of Land Struggles in Hawaiʻi”. The exhibit will be on view through December 3, 2022. “Somehow, I Don’t Feel Comfortable (Hawaiʻi Version)” by Hawaiʻi Triennial 2022 artist Momoyo Torimitsu is currently on display in the ground floor POD (Passion On Display) space through December 3, 2022. This piece was previously displayed at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center.

HT22 Art in Conversation: Pacific Sisters
The Hawaiʻi Triennial “Art in Conversation” talk in August (moderated by Josh Tengan, Hawai‘i Contemporary associate director), included members of the Aotearoa-based collective “Pacific Sisters”: Rosanna Raymond, Feeonaa Clifton and Suzanne Tamaki. They discussed their art collective, use of augmented reality, and their work, “Te Pu o Te Wheke”, which features striking portraits of powerful avatars that they created. The 2022 Hawaiʻi Triennial - Pacific Century - E Hoʻomau no Moananuiākea exhibit is on view through December 3, 2022, at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum in downtown Honolulu. Admission is free.

September 2022 Arts and Culture Highlights

•Hawaiian History Month: the Hawaiʻi Ponoʻī Coalition is proud to present the third Hawaiian History Month in 2022! In celebration of Queen Liliʻuokalani's 184th birthday,Hawaiʻi Ponoʻī is holding five weeks of in-person and virtual events throughout the month of September. Kicking off the month is Queen Liliʻuokalani's Birthday program on Thursday, September 2, 2022 at 9am with a virtual celebration and later at 4pm with an in-person walking tour and concert. •Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities and the Hawaiʻi State Public Library System present “Try Think”, a thought provoking film and conversation series with films from Hawaiʻi and the Pacific. Registration for these virtual events is required and each session is limited to 100 participants. Upcoming online sessions include September 15, “Molokaʻi Bound” (a wayward young man, recently released from prison, struggles to reconnect with his son and Hawaiian heritage), October 20 “Anointed” (Impacts of nuclear weapons tests on the Republic of the Marshall Islands), and November 17, “Hae Hawaiʻi” (a historical drama about the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy). Honolulu Star Advertiser August 22, 2022 - State’s Poet Laureate Receives $50,000 Grant

“The recently passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 83 appointed the Hawaii Council for the Humanities, the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and the Hawaii State Public Library system to collaborate to periodically establish Hawaii’s future poet laureates. It was founded on the basis that poetry encourages storytelling, deep thinking, empathy and connections among cultures while encouraging the preservation of culture, the arts, history, humanities, music and literature, according to the resolution.

The incoming poet laureate will receive annual funding of $20,000 per year to promote and encourage the appreciation of poetry and literary life in Hawaii while inspiring emerging generations of new writers, according to the Hawaii State Poet Laureate Program overview.”

“The citywide contemporary art celebration Hawai‘i Triennial 2022 may be over but you can still catch extended exhibits on display at HiSAM and attend free public programs until Dec. 3. HiSAM and Hawai‘i Contemporary are giving a rare opportunity to learn more about HT22 straight from the artists themselves with their Art in Conversation series.

The Art in Conversation series is presented in partnership with ‘Ōlelo Community Media. If you’re not able to make it in person you can watch upcoming talks streamed live on olelo.org.”

Decisions about grants, artwork purchases, and more are made by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) Board of Commissioners. Meetings are currently being held virtually on Zoom, and the public is invited to attend. Appointed by the state governor, the Board of Commissioners oversees the Executive Director, provides input, and approves spending. Commissioners are volunteers and do not receive compensation for their duties.
Individuals may submit written testimony on posted agenda items in advance of the meeting via email to HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov or by mail addressed to the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, 250 South Hotel Street, 2nd Floor, Honolulu, HI 96813. Individuals interested in signing up to provide oral testimony on posted agenda items at the meeting may submit their name, email, and phone number to HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov. Individuals may provide oral testimony at the meeting via the above-listed video conferencing link or by calling the above listed telephone number. Testimony presented during the meeting will be limited to three minutes each.

Agenda items for General Meetings may include approval of artwork acquisition recommendations and Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) art exhibit visit recommendations.

The mission of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts is to promote, perpetuate, preserve and encourage culture and the arts, history and the humanities as central to the quality of life of the people of Hawai‘i. HSFCA funding is provided by the State of Hawai‘i and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Hawaii State Art Museum

The Hawai'i State Art Museum is dedicated to presenting the largest and finest collection of works by Hawai'i artists that celebrate the diverse artistic and cultural legacy of Hawai'i.

OUR MISSION
To promote, perpetuate, preserve and encourage culture and the arts, history and the humanities as central to the quality of life of the people of Hawai`i. HSFCA funding is provided by the State of Hawai`i and the National Endowment for the Arts. The HSFCA is administratively attached to the Department of Accounting and General Services.

HOURS:
The musuem is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed State and Federal Holdays. Always free admission. For pre-recorded information call 586-0900.

The Hawai'i State Art Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. For pre-recorded summary information on the museum, call (808) 586-0900.
