State of Hawaiʻi Poet Laureate
After almost two years of planning and the passing of a legislative resolution, the Hawaiʻi State Poet Laureate program has launched! Program planning was initiated by Aiko Yamashiro of the Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities. She reached out to SFCA almost two years ago and began a dialogue of monthly meetings that included State Librarian Stacey Aldrich and others in the community to build the platform of the poet laurate. The group then reached out to Senator Brian Taniguchi to include his input. The committee brought the program to the attention of the state legislature via the concurrent resolution (although resolutions don’t become law, they do express the sentiment of the Legislature and may prove vital in moving an issue forward – learn more about resolutions on the LRB website: LRB.Hawaii.gov/PAR/overview-of-the-legislative-process).
“Poetry has a unique contribution to make to our society – strengthening civic voice, empathy, and understanding, expanding our hearts. A State Poet Laureate Program will encourage and value poetry in our many communities and help to make poetry feel like it truly belongs to everyone as a powerful mode of expression, connection, and enriching way of life.” – Aiko Yamashiro, Executive Director, Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities
This fellowship will award $20,000/year for three years to an accomplished Hawaiʻi-based poet who wants to help activate poetry in the community throughout the state of Hawaiʻi.
•Interisland travel and public programming will be sponsored, supported, and funded. Hawaiʻi State Public Library System is a committed venue partner.
•Applicants need 10 or more years’ experience doing community poetry work, publishing, etc., in Hawaiʻi.
•Musicians and haku mele are poets too! The selection committee will consider poetry as it is grounded in our unique Hawaiʻi context.
•Ideal candidate has the energy and drive to create innovative public events and workshops over a three-year period, involving many voices and communities—those who already identify as writers and those who do not (yet).
Nominate the Hawaiʻi State Poet Laureate through August 31, 2022. Learn more on our website: SFCA.Hawaii.gov/PL.
Pāʻina Pōʻalima: State Art Museum Partners with Honolulu Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts for new Friday night series
The Honolulu Mayor's Office of Culture and the Arts (Honolulu MOCA) and the Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts have teamed up to present a series of Pāʻina Pōalima - monthly events to showcase some of the customs of our islands. Pāʻina Pōalima celebrates art and traditions that truly make Hawaiʻi distinct, drawing more Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander performances and art expressions into the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum (HiSAM), giving the public unique experiences to enjoy activities of native peoples in all its forms.
"MOCA and HiSAM do much of the same type of work, and most times have similar goals. It was a natural progression for us to put our resources together to amplify the work of both our organizations," stated Makanani Salā, Executive Director of MOCA.
In the upcoming months, this event will continue to highlight Pasifika creative expression, music, dance, and food. Check the State Art Museum calendar (HiSAM.Hawaii.gov/calendar) for updates and subscribe to the State Art Museum newsletter (HiSAM.Hawaii.gov/Newsletter) to get information about events emailed to you.

Culture Fellowships, Creative Workforce Grants Postponed
On July 6, 2022, Governor David Ige announced the line-item vetoes for House Bill 1600, the Supplemental Appropriations of 2022. The Bill allocated Coronavirus State Fiscal Recovery Relief Funds (CSFRF), funded by the America Rescue Plan Act (APRA), to State entities. Through the Bill, the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) was allocated Coronavirus State Fiscal Recovery Relief Funds (CSFRF) to support the Creative Workforce Grant ($500,000) and the Culture Fellowship Grant ($200,000). Due to these line-items vetoes, the SFCA is fiscally no longer able to move forward with the Creative Workforce Grant and the Culture Fellowship Grant and will postpone the programs.
SFCA has re-applied to the Administration to release the funds. Read more about the vetoes on the Governor’s website: Governor Ige Announces Line-Item Vetoes.
