2022 Poetry Out Loud

2022 Poetry Out Loud State Champion Tasha Kanoa
Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and state coordinator, Honolulu Theatre for Youth, are pleased to announce that Tasha Kanoa is the 2022 Hawaiʻi Poetry Out Loud Champion. Tasha, 12th grade, represented Mid-Pacific School of the Arts in Honolulu and won over a competitive field of 11 students representing high schools on Kauaʻi, Maui, Oʻahu, and Hawaiʻi Island. Due to the on-going pandemic, the Hawaiʻi finals were held as a video submission contest in early March. The first runner-up was Alana Clayson, 10th grade from Punahou School. The third place winner was Tessa Chin, 11th grade from Maui Preparatory Academy.

“I was very surprised to find out that I’d won the State competition. I felt honored for the opportunity to represent my state in the National competition, but also intimidated at the same time” shared Tasha after winning. “Poetry Out Loud has been a topic in my family for years. After my older sister participated a few years ago, I felt driven to as well. Due to COVID, the competitive process was much different than previous years, but ultimately a very organized, eventful, and fun experience.”

Volunteer to be a National Endowment for the Arts Panelist: Arts Endowment panelists play a central role in reviewing applications for funding. The NEA relies on panels composed of individuals who represent a broad range of artistic and cultural viewpoints, as well as wide geographic and ethnic diversity, to provide advice about the artistic excellence and artistic merit of proposals in a variety of funding categories. Panels are composed of both arts professionals and knowledgeable laypersons. Most panelists are arts professionals who are qualified by their activities, training, skills, and/or experience in one or more art forms. Every panel also includes a layperson – someone knowledgeable about the arts but not engaged in the arts as a profession either full- or part-time. Learn more on the NEA website: www.arts.gov/form/volunteer-to-be-a-national-endowment-for-the-arts-panelist.

Hawaiʻi State Art Museum (HiSAM)

Two large ceramic sculptures by Jun Kaneko now greet visitors to the No. 1 Capitol District building (home to the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum along with several other state offices). Previously on display in the “EMPHASIZED: eye on scale” exhibit in the State Art Museum (2017-2020), these sculptures are now permanently installed at the Richards Street entrance to the building.

Each sculpture weighs 1,800 pounds and are on custom built steel stands. June Kaneko has been an active artist for over five decades. Known foremost for his ceramic art, he also works in glass, painting, set designs for operas, and large-scale public commissions. Kaneko’s work resides in hundreds of prestigious museums and private collections worldwide. These sculptures are two of the eight pieces by Kaneko in the SFCA’s Art in Public Places Collection, which includes the three “Tropical Sounds” sculptures at the Waikīkī Aquarium. “Untitled Head I”, with clearly defined facial features, represents the reality of humankind and “Untitled Head II”, with subtle facial features, reflects the spirit of humankind.

SFCA Executive Director Jonathan Johnson enjoys having sculptures of this scale and prominence available to the general public and has been planning to have the sculptures installed on the lawn since the acquisition of the sculptures in 2017.
