New Koa Butterfly wing mosaic unveiled at the Honolulu Zoo

WAIKĪKĪ -- The Honolulu Zoological Society, in partnership with students from Waikīkī School, unveiled a beautiful ceramic mosaic of Koa Butterfly wings today at the Honolulu Zoo.

The Zoo already possesses painted, adult size Kamehameha Butterfly wings for visitors to photograph themselves in front of, but requested Waikīkī School make Koa Butterfly wings in a child's size.

Ms. Davis' 1st grade class and Ms. Lau's 3rd grade class were up to the challenge. They worked throughout the year learning about this beautiful native butterfly and working to make a set of wings out of ceramics, which are on display now at the Honolulu Zoo.

The Koa Butterfly (Udara blackburni) is one of only two native butterflies found in Hawai‘i, the other being the Kamehameha Butterfly. The Koa Butterfly, a tiny iridescent blue and green butterfly, can be found sipping nectar from ʻiliahi or ‘a‘ali‘i flowers, and when in the caterpillar stage it feasts on koa leaves.

The Honolulu Zoo is open daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the grounds closing at 4 p.m. For more information, visit honoluluzoo.org.
