City to extend hours for renewing driver’s licenses and state IDs

HONOLULU – Extended hours are the latest step in renewed efforts on O‘ahu to meet growing public demand for driver’s licenses, learner’s permits and state identification cards.

Starting July 1, the Kapālama, Kapolei, Ko‘olau and Wai‘anae driver licensing centers will open an hour early at 7 a.m., instead of the usual 8 a.m., to perform transactions for customers who need to renew driver’s licenses, learner’s permits and state identification cards. They all will stay open Monday through Friday an hour late until 5 p.m., giving priority to customers who make appointments on the city’s AlohaQ reservation system.

The Windward City, Hawai‘i Kai and Downtown satellite city halls will also offer extended hours on weekdays, opening an hour early at 7 a.m. for customers who need to renew driver’s licenses, learner’s permits or state identification cards.

In addition, these three satellite city halls and the Pearlridge Satellite City Hall will open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays strictly to serve customers who are renewing driver’s licenses, learner’s permits or state identification cards.

“Our hope is that the extended hours on weekdays and Saturdays will offer the convenience and extra boost needed to achieve our goal of eliminating the pandemic-caused backlog by the end of the year,” said Nola Miyasaki, director of the city’s Department of Customer Services.

In addition to the backlog, an estimated 73,384 driver’s licenses, learner’s permits and state identification cards will have to be renewed on O‘ahu between July 1 and the end of the year.

In order to meet demand, driver licensing centers and satellite city halls are relying on extended hours and a series of other operational changes, including offering stand-by service, which allows customers to fill appointment slots that become available from cancellations and no-shows, and making additional next-day appointment slots available at Kapālama and Kapolei driver licensing centers each business day between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
