City to suspend mail-in option for seniors renewing a driver's license

HONOLULU -- Renewing a driver's license by mail will soon no longer be an option for motorists age 72 and over in the City and County of Honolulu.

Driver licensing centers on Oahu will suspend offering the mail-in option to this segment of the population on June 1, as these city offices prepare for a return to business as usual after more than a year of pandemic-caused changes in customer service.

For the past seven months, the mail-in option has been available to the 55,456 drivers on Oahu -- who are ages 72 and over -- to help them safely weather the coronavirus crisis.

With many motorists in this age group now vaccinated, driver licensing centers are shifting their focus and resources to staffing their counters with all available clerks in an effort to break through a pandemic-caused backlog by the end of the year.

"A top priority over the next seven months will be to help all of our locations adapt and thrive under growing public pressure to meet demand for city services," said Nola Miyasaki, director of the city's Department of Customer Services.

Appointments are recommended at all driver licensing centers on Oahu. But customers can now stand-by to fill appointment slots that become available from cancellations. The stand-by service is offered on a limited, first-come, first-served basis.
