MCCOY PAVILLION, ALA MOANA REGIONAL PARK
CALL TO ORDER: Committee Chair Ryan Tam called the meeting to order at 6:06 p.m.
IN ATTENDANCE: Ryan Tam (Chair), Chris Chung, Brian Bagnall, Sharon Moriwaki
UNFINISHED BUISNESS
• Next Steps for Ala Wai Promenade:
o Letter to be drafted regarding follow up to the Ala Wai Promenade. Specific ideas could include benches, tables (for chess players), motion sensor-activated lights, vandal-proof trash bins, etc.
o Overall, parks should provide at least 10 activities to be successful.
o Need to contact the City Department of Transportation Services regarding safety improvements at Kalakaua Avenue.
• Kakaako Mauka Area Open Space Planning:
o No update on HECO project.
• Homelessness Strategies:
o Consider joint meeting with other neighborhood boards to discuss and get more citizen input.
o Suggestion that board could focus attention on a single issue over the course of several meetings. Example: board could recognize community leaders (certificate) as a way to build awareness about the issue.
o Hawaii State Teachers Association has focused on homeless around McKinley High School
o Suggestion to conduct more research more about the effectiveness of Bill 52 (restricting homeless campers from blocking sidewalks).
o Should recommend that the HPD and social services agencies coordinate efforts.
NEW BUSINESS
• Other Project Ideas
O Revive Obama Presidential Library concept
??? When Chicago was picked for the main library; the foundation intended to create a satellite presence (visitor center?) in Hawaii. Perhaps foundation could consider a "living" community center.
Could help clean up Kakaako makai area.
o Pedestrian safety issues
Need to find out the biggest hazard areas in the district
Request data on hot spots in the neighborhood; see if video footage is available
Consider crossing guards around Ala Moana Center; perhaps get a pilot project started using martial arts class volunteers
Talk to Hawaii State Department of Transportation representative
o Look at noise issues: https://www.quieteroahu.com/
OTHER RESIDENT CONCERNS:
• Need more trees at Ala Moana Park.
• Concern about building setbacks and impact of new construction on monkeypod trees along Kapiolani Boulevard between Atkinson and Keeaumoku Street.
ADJOURNMENT: As there was no further business before the Committee, Chair Tam adjourned the meeting at 7:20 p.m.
